After storms or severe weather, residents may encounter downed power lines. Here’s how to handle and properly report these situations:
Always assume downed lines are energized and extremely dangerous.
Keep yourself and others at least 35 feet away from downed lines and anything in contact with them.
Never attempt to move or touch a downed power line.
Emergency Situations: If a downed line poses an immediate threat to life, fire, or other significant hazards, call 911 immediately.
Non-Emergency Situations:
First, contact CenterPoint Energy directly by calling their emergency line at 1-800-227-1376.
If additional assistance is required or CenterPoint Energy cannot immediately address the situation, contact Vanderburgh County Central Dispatch at (812) 426-7331.
Accurately representing the severity of the situation ensures appropriate resources are dispatched. Exaggerating or misrepresenting a hazard will not speed up the restoration of power but instead diverts emergency resources from critical, life-threatening situations.
