Even if you have a burn permit, our department is still required to respond if a complaint is made by calling 911. Upon arrival, we may be required to extinguish the fire if any of the following conditions are met:

1️⃣ The fire is unattended or lacks an available water source.
2️⃣ The fire is deemed a nuisance. (Excessive smoke, odor, or affecting neighbors’ quality of life)
3️⃣ The fire is too large or poses a hazard to nearby structures.
4️⃣ Illegal materials are being burned. (Only clean wood and yard waste are allowed—no trash, treated wood, plastics, or other prohibited materials)
5️⃣ Burn bans are in effect. (Local or state-issued restrictions due to dry conditions or air quality concerns)

For more information about what is allowed and local restrictions, contact IDEM or visit their website at https://www.in.gov/idem/openburning/

If you have an immediate concern about a fire, call 911 to report it.
